Firing Processes
"I fire my clay work in a wood kiln because it is a creative tool like no other. Unlike electric kilns, which produce oxidized atmospheres, the combustion of wood to fire the clay requires oxygen, which in turn allows me to regulate the amount of air the kiln gets at certain stages of firing. This, along with the wood ash flying and swirling around and along the flame path from the firebox to the flue, is what creates my glazes and effects on shapes and clay work. Technically, my work is reduction firing. Firing takes 3 to 6 days and uses 6 to 12 tons of wood. I fire with mimosa wood, which is an alien invasive tree, the ash of which is also present on the clay surfaces. The work is fired at 1310 degrees Celsius, making it a very stable and durable stoneware. So the fire leaves its mark on the work in an uncontrived way, which would otherwise be impossible to replicate by hand, but the process is managed by my hand. Years of firing teach me what the kiln can produce, which part of the kiln has certain desirable effects on the surface of work, and how I can manage future firings to enhance my work and harness and use the fire in an aesthetic way." - Mich Haigh

Creative processes
"My creativity starts with me hand-digging clay around where I live in the KZN Midlands, which has an abundance of clay. I sieve and texture the clay and age it before using it in my studio. I use wheel, slab, and hand-building techniques and usually combinations of all three to make my shapes. Form follows function, and fun has informed my work and what I make. Generally, gravity, centrifugal force, and magnetism are the energies that shape my work. So my work is greatly influenced by the environment, materials, and processes. My creativity ends with the firing." - Mich Haigh
